As you are not yet a client of The Media Development Lounge, I think that I can safely say that there are a few points that you are not too sure about regarding investing in Documentaries. The most common question is:

How risky is it?

I think  once you read this email you are going to be pleasantly surprised regarding how exciting and solid Feature Documentaries can be as an investment.

As with any investment there are always going to be risks involved. Even Treasury Bonds and Savings Accounts are exposed to an element of risk and Documentaries are no different.

With Documentaries, many factors come into play, and I will list them again for you below.

  • The track record of the Director and Studio
  • Does the film have a strong cast?
  • Is there a proven Director and/or Producers involved?
  • Does it have the right budget to support the production?
  • Most importantly - is the story compelling?

All of the above are risks that you can hopefully assess before you invest into a Feature Documentary. If you are investing into a film that is being made by a new studio and a first time director who is underfunded with a weak script, then your chances of success are infinitesimal.

(We will certainly furnish you with enough information to make a clear and levelled decision about the current projects at the time of your enquiry).

However, probably the biggest and most common risks in this industry are:

  1. Will the film get made?
  2. Will the film get sold?

We represent Jon Brewer and his studios. They are currently (at the time of writing this) working on their 18th Feature Documentary. All of the documentaries for which he has raised funds have been made, and he has a 100% record of recoupment on all of his documentaries that have been in distribution for 36 months. This indicates that his films do in fact sell.

I will cover the subject of returns in my next email, however, if you want to know exactly how everything works then take a look at our Introduction to Feature Documentary Investment, the link below will take you straight to it.

In the meantime, have a great weekend.
Kindest regards,

Charles Wood
