Global reputation of UK law 'under threat' if qualification is watered down

The Law Society has warned that proposals being developed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority to change the way solicitors qualify could damage the global competitiveness of UK law.

Our detailed research with City members shows that a particular concern for firms is the possibility that the internationally respected period of workplace learning may be abolished.

Practising fees

Consultation results

The Law Society Group consulted with members on the proposed budget and practising certificate fee for the financial year from 1 November 2015 to 31 October 2016. Our summary of the findings sets out the main responses received.

PC fee unchanged

The individual PC fee will remain at £320. Compensation fund contributions will also remain unchanged at £548 for firms and £32 for individuals.

OPG publishes new standards for deputies

On Monday 6 July, the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) introduced new deputy standards to support and supervise professional and public authority deputies. The new standards are important for solicitors in England and Wales who act as deputies in their professional capacity.

Membership cards

We want to remind members that we do not issue photographic ID cards for members. We have been alerted by the Bar Council Records Office and a senior clerk from chambers that an unknown individual has shown such a card to the Bar Council to check credentials. The only membership card we issue is the card that allows members to gain access to the facilities at 113 Chancery Lane.
