Criminal legal aid tender

We are acutely aware of the stress criminal solicitors are working under as they await the Ministry of Justice announcement on the outcome of the duty tenders. We have issued guidance on potential remedies for solicitors should they be unsuccessful in relation to all or part of their tender.

The Law Society has a pastoral care helpline that offers support on weekdays and LawCare also provides a free confidential helpline operating 365 days a year.

New leasehold property forms

The Law Society, in conjunction with trade associations across the legal and leasehold sectors, has revised the leasehold property enquiry form LPE1. The second edition of the LPE1 form was released today along with the introduction of a buyers leasehold information summary (LPE2).

Law Society advises Migration Advisory Committee

Following close liaison with City firms, the Law Society has responded to the government-commissioned review of the Tier 2 migration route for skilled workers. We have advised that the UK must be able to recruit skilled lawyers from outside the European Economic Area if London is to retain its pre-eminent position as a global centre of legal excellence.

Society welcomes review of employment tribunal fees

The Law Society has welcomed the Ministry of Justice's review of the impact of employment tribunal (ET) fees. We believe that ET fees have harmed access to justice: there has been a 67 per cent reduction in the number of people taking disputes to the employment tribunal.

Library hours extended in October

In response to several requests from members, the library will be extending its opening hours during October.

During the month members will be able to work in the library and telephone/email their research enquiries to the library service team from 09:00-18:00, Monday-Thursday.

Library
Normal opening hours of 09:00-17:00 will operate for each Friday of the month. The enquiry telephone number is 020 7320 5946 or email library@lawsociety.org.uk.

Legal Ombudsman: scheme rules consultation

The Legal Ombudsman ( LeO) has launched a consultation into changes to its scheme rules which would be necessary for it to become an alternative dispute resolution entity. The proposals include the removal of all but one of LeO's time limits and the extension of the remaining time limit.
