Criminal: legal aid tender actions

The Law Society is gravely concerned about the timeline set by the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) for the commencement of the contracts in light of the widespread litigation arising from the duty solicitor tender process. We have raised our concerns with the LAA and requested that it considers the feasibility of the timeline and ensures contingencies are in place in the event that the 11 January start date cannot be met.

Civil: face-to-face contracts to share 2018 start date

The LAA has announced that all existing civil and family legal aid contracts are to be aligned so that they end on 31 March 2018. Contracts that were due to expire next March will be extended for two years. Contracts that are currently scheduled to run past 31 March 2018 will be terminated early to ensure all the contracts are aligned once more, as they were prior to 2013.
