February 2016

Leanne Maund

Welcome to the first update from the Junior Lawyers Division of 2016, and my introduction as chair of the JLD committee.

Firstly I'd like to thank my fellow junior lawyers, Tamasin Dorosti, Emma Dickinson, Kayleigh Leonie, and last year's chair, Max Harris, for their time on the JLD committee and the work they put into representing junior lawyers. You can read about their productive year in the JLD annual report. I would also next like to welcome the new JLD committee members - Ben Fraser, Amy Clowrey, Charlotte Parkinson, Nikhil Bowry and the new vice chair, Bryan Scant. They have been elected to join the JLD committee this year alongside our continuing committee members.

Our focus for 2016
Junior lawyers face a wide range of issues, and the JLD aims to ensure that our views are heard. We, the division's members are the future of the legal profession, and therefore issues that affect us, potentially affect all solicitors. Our focus for the year is:

  • representing current and future junior lawyers in relation to the SRA proposal for a centralised assessment to qualify as a solicitor
  • supporting solicitors in their career and skills progression who are less then six years PQE
  • increasing engagement with our members across the whole of England and Wales, and
  • raising our profile both here and abroad

SRA proposal to replace existing routes to qualification with a new centralised assessment
In December, the SRA released the first consultation on its proposed new Solicitors' Qualifying Examination (SQE). The JLD has concerns about this proposal in terms of quality of training and social mobility in the profession. We will be responding to the consultation in full, so please get in touch and give us your views. Alternatively, the Law Society is encouraging the profession to respond to the SRA and have their say.
Read the JLD statement on the SQE.

As always, please feel free to get in touch with us at juniorlawyers@lawsociety.org.uk or via one of our social media channels.
