Friars Walk Opens

Newport's eagerly anticipated Friars Walk retail and leisure destination was yesterday opened by the leader of Newport City Council, Councillor Bob Bright, in the presence of the First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones, and Paul Sargent, Chief Executive and Co-Founder of Queensberry Real Estate, the owner and developer. The Rt Revd Richard Pain, Bishop of Monmouth, also welcomed visitors by blessing the new centre.

Delivered by Queensberry Real Estate, Friars Walk was the result of a private-public partnership with a loan provided by Newport City Council. Councillor Bob Bright, Leader of Newport City Council said: "This is a momentous day for the city, its residents and businesses. The day we see our vision becoming a reality.

Fashion fans will be able to enjoy the brand new Topshop, New Look and River Island stores among other high street favourites including Mothercare, Schuh, The Body Shop and Pandora. Newport's dining offer has also seen a significant uplift with the opening of Las Iguanas, Nandos, TGI Fridays, GBK and Le Bistrot Pierre on 12 November. For those on the move, Greggs, Coffee #1 and Krispy Kreme will offer more food and drink options.

Christmas opening times for Friars Walk are:

  • Shopping: Monday - Friday (9am - 8pm), Saturday (9am - 7pm), Sunday & Bank Holiday - 10am - 5pm
  • Dining: Monday - Saturday (9am - 11pm), Sunday (10am - 10.30pm), Bank Holiday (10am - 10.30pm)
  • Cinema: Monday - Friday (11am - 12.30am), Saturday - Sunday (09.30am - 12.30am), Bank Holiday (09.30am - 12.30am)

Newport is a digital city

The Super Connected Cities project is part of Newport City Council's plans to improve access to internet based services across the city.

Newport is a Digital City with great new ways to access free wi-fi. 

Residents and visitors to the city centre can log on to free wi-fi in over 50 public buildings in Newport, in the city centre and on Newport buses, just look out for the Community Cloud logo.

Christmas in Newport

An evening of free fun and entertainment will take place in Newport city centre on Thursday, November 19 when the Christmas lights go on.

Activities will take place along Commercial Street from 4pm including festive singing from Newport Rock Choir, performances from Gwent Music and entertainment from the Capital FM Street Stars. Plus meet Newport Gwent Dragons squad members.

The mayor of Newport Councillor Herbie Thomas will switch the lights on at 6pm in Commercial Street. 

Danter’s funfair will also be open along the riverfront walk between The Riverfront and University of South Wales buildings, ensuring there will be plenty to do all evening in and around the city centre.

Rent Smart Wales

New registration and licensing requirements for landlords under the Housing (Wales) Act 2014 come into effect from 23 November 2015.

From this date, if you rent out accommodation in Newport, or anywhere in Wales, private landlords are required to register and private landlords or their agents will need to obtain a licence from Rent Smart Wales.

Landlords and their agents will have 12 months from 23 November 2015 to comply with the new legislation and undergo Rent Smart Wales training.
