Weekly news from Newport City Council 27 November - 4 December

Friars Walk, Newport's eagerly anticipated shopping and leisure destination, is now open!

Friars Walk opened on 12th November to an incredible response - 102,000 visitors on opening day and 350,000 visitors over the first weekend.

Welcoming shoppers was a 90,000 sq ft full offer Debenhams Department Store and an 8 screen Cineworld multiplex cinema. Fashion fans were able to enjoy the brand new Next, H&M, Topshop, New Look and River Island stores among other high street favourites including Mothercare, Schuh, The Body Shop and Pandora. Newport's dining offer saw a significant uplift with the opening of Las Iguanas, Nandos, TGI Fridays, GBK and Le Bistrot Pierre. For those on the move, Greggs, Coffee #1 and Krispy Kreme offered additional food and drink options. More stores and restaurants will be opening in time for Christmas.

Nursery applications

Decisions will be issued on the 30 November 2015 for on-time Rising 3 applications. Applicants are asked to wait for their decision letter as decisions cannot be issued over the telephone. Should they not receive a letter by Monday 7 December please call to request a copy of your decision letter.

Christmas park and ride

The park and ride service runs on Saturdays between 31 October 2015 and 2 January 2016.

Buses run every 10 mins between 9am to 5pm from the top and bottom car parks of the Civic Centre and stop at Queensway and Bridge Street. This service is free.

Somerton Road Bridge closure

Network Rail is reminding residents that a temporary footbridge will open next week to provide a safe alternative way to cross the railway as Somerton Road bridge closes to allow for the electrification of the railway between London and Swansea.

What's on

There is lots to see and do over the coming week in Newport including:

  • Saturday 28 November - Soup and starlings - Be amazed by the marvel of the starling murmuration at Newport Wetlands. A tasty cup of soup will keep you warm as you are guided by our local expert to see the starlings put on a dusk spectacle. 3.45pm-5pm at Newport Wetlands Reserve.
  • The Riverfront Pantomime starts on Tuesday 1 December and runs until 2 January. Buy tickets here
