|Whitburn Miners Memorial is unveiled|
A new Whitburn Miners Memorial was unveiled at a special ceremony in the town. The Memorial marked the sacrifice of the men, women and children who toiled and gave their lives mining coal, ironstone and clay within the Whitburn parish, from the earliest days.
The initiative was led on behalf of the community by Whitburn & District Community Council with support from West Lothian Council and the Whitburn Town Centre Management Group. Funding was provided for the mining memorial by West Lothian Council via the Town Centre Improvement Fund for Whitburn.
|Could you be a Foster Carer?|
The largest foster carer recruitment campaign in the UK - Foster Care Fortnight - is taking place over the next two weeks and aims to raise awareness of fostering, as well as highlighting the need for more foster carers in the UK. There are different types of fostering: full-time; permanent; short-break; outreach and supported adult placement. West Lothian Council is supporting the campaign and is urging anyone interested to take a minute or two to find out more.
|Council funded police officers praised|
The impact of council funding on local policing is being hailed following the arrest in Whitburn of two bogus workmen who allegedly duped a West Lothian pensioner into handing over thousands of pounds. West Lothian Council has invested nearly £680,000 this year to help fund an additional 21 police officers for West Lothian. The Police Officers who made the arrests in Whitburn were members of the West Lothian Community Action Team and are funded by West Lothian Council.
|More creative success for Broxburn Academy|
|Broxburn Academy is celebrating more creative success after pupil, Ryan Shaw, took second place in the art category of the Never Such Innocence Art and Poetry Competition. Ryan has been awarded £125 for himself and a further £125 for the school as well as an invite to attend the House of Lords to celebrate his success. Ryan will be attending the House of Lords with another Broxburn Academy pupil, Robyn Beckett, who recently won first place in the poetry section of the competition.|
|Scottish College Cup|
|West Lothian College students have qualified for the Scottish College Cup in the Men's Rugby 7s and Women's Basketball events.This year the finals of the Scottish College Cup will be held at the University of Stirling on Wednesday 18 May. The prestigious event will see the most talented College student athletes from across Scotland come together to compete to be national champions. West Lothian College men's rugby team qualified to participate in the College Cup 7s finals day for the second year running.|
