  Congratulations to West Lothian's Young Writers   

Carmondean Primary School pupil Joy Koay has been named as West Lothian's Young Writer of the Year 2016. Joy beat off almost 7,500 entries from 52 local primary schools to win the prestigious title with her detailed and richly-imagined short story where the narrator wakes up on a desert island. She describes the first three days of being marooned on the island using wonderful imagery.  Almost 250 guests attended the Awards ceremony at Howden Park Centre on Wednesday 15 June, to see Joy and 25 other prize winners from local schools receive their awards.

  Bright start for Simpson Primary pavilions  
  A £2 million investment in two new learning pavilions aims to ensure that West Lothian young people have the best possible start in life.
Pupils from Simpson Primary School, Bathgate, put on a special opening ceremony called 'Watch this Space', using music, video and presentations to demonstrate the positive impact of the new pavilion's flexible spaces on their learning. West Lothian Council's development partner Hub South East delivered the project, with Morrison Construction as the main contractor.

  Extra £1/4 million to boost public transport  
  public transport An extra £1/4 million is being invested to boost public transport in West Lothian. West Lothian Council's Executive Committee voted to help those affected by changes to local bus services. The £250,000 will be used to extend the operating hours for the town bus services numbers 1 Linlithgow, 5 Bathgate and 6 Armadale and Whitburn by three additional hours.  An additional morning and evening direct 36 service between Stoneyburn and Bathgate, Monday to Saturday will be introduced. The route of the 31 service will also be changed to include Dechmont and Ladywell in Livingston, while a new taxibus service for Newton to South Queensferry will be brought in.

  Boghall roundabout works  
  Boghall roundabout West Lothian travellers are advised to expect disruption due to essential resurfacing work on the Boghall Roundabout outside of Bathgate.
Significant disruption is expected for the first stage of work, which starts on Thursday 30 June and lasts for two weeks. Lane closures only will be required for the first four days of the work, with phased road closures from Monday 4 July until Thursday 14 July to allow the exit and approach roads to be safely resurfaced. The second stage will take place from Monday, 8 August for a further two weeks to complete the works.

  Nothing spoils summer like pink chicken  
  The West Lothian Summer Safe 2016 campaign is supporting Food Standards Scotland's (FSS) message 'Nothing Spoils Summer like Pink Chicken'. The FSS Pink Chicken will go about Scotland creating mayhem and 'spoiling summer'. This is in response to evidence which shows that increases in barbecuing and chicken purchase and consumption during June-August coincide with peaks in Campylobacter infection, which is the most common form of food poisoning in Scotland.

Findlay Napier is one of the most highly-regarded performers and creative forces on the Scottish folk scene - thoroughly active and truly energised with a heart-warming zing.  He supported Eddi Reader last year and is well known as the host of Celtic Connections’ Late Night Sessions.  Findlay has gained a huge amount of critical acclaim, with BBC Radio 6’s Gideon Coe saying "… well worth investigating.  Splendid stuff!" and the Sunday Express awarded his recent release ‘album of the week’.  Saturday 6 August, 7.30pm. Community is invited to remember the Battle of the Somme   Friday 1 July, 7.15am, Civic Centre
Local people are being invited to attend a special service at West Lothian Civic Centre on Friday 1 July at 7.15am, to mark the start of the Battle of the Somme. The special event will include a welcome by the Reverend Nigel Anderson, Legion Scotland Livingston Branch Chaplain. Provost Tom Kerr will read Flanders Fields and Sandy Henderson, Legion Scotland Livingston Branch Chairman who will read Binyon's Lines. The Battle of the Somme took place from 1 July until 18 November 1916 and is widely acknowledged as one of the bloodiest battles of World War One.

New equipment at Xcite gyms   Coming soon

Gym users at Xcite Whitburn, Xcite Fauldhouse and Xcite East Calder will soon benefit from new equipment thanks to a programme of gym refurbishments. Xcite Whitburn and Xcite East Calder will both benefit from new Cardio Technogym Equipment, a new functional training system and a new SKILLMILLS. SKILLMILLS is the first non-motorized piece of equipment that combines power, speed, stamina and agility training and Xcite Whitburn and Xcite East Calder are the first leisure provider in Scotland to have this piece of kit. There’s also good news for customers at Xcite Fauldhouse, which is based at Fauldhouse Partnership Centre, as the facility will soon have upgraded cardio Technogym equipment available. To allow works to be carried out the Gyms will close.
