  New project encourages local people to cycle  

A new cycling project which encourages local people to try cycling has been launched in West Lothian. The aim of the new initiative is to make cycling more accessible by supporting community groups to establish free bike lending libraries and deliver volunteer-led cycle training, cycle rides and basic maintenance, for people who are new to cycling or who are a little bit rusty.

  The James Young High School It has been another successful year for The James Young High School where the staff and students have recently celebrated their achievements at the 2016 prize-giving. Head Teacher, Catrina Hatch said: "I am so proud of each and every pupil who has received an award this year.  I would like to thank them for their commitment, determination, talent and sheer hard work. Also to parents/carers for their support and encouragement, and our staff for their tireless efforts in helping our pupils be the very best they can be."

  Free swimming during the school holidays  
  Free Swimming Youngsters aged 15 and under living in West Lothian are being invited to stay safe during the summer holidays by taking advantage of free swimming. Xcite and West Lothian Council's free swimming programme is available at facilities across West Lothian until Monday 22 August 2016. The West Lothian Council funded programme aims to encourage young people to keep active and healthy during the school holiday periods.

  Beecraigs animal attraction  
  Visitors to Beecraigs Country Park’s animal attraction will see the Red Deer herd, Highland Cattle fold, Belted Galloways and Hebridean Sheep.  The park is open throughout the year and admission is free. The Sutherland Way walkway provides access between the fields and provides visitors with views across the landscape and of the animals. If you are visiting in the next few days, remember to look out for the pigs and calves in the viewing sheds.

Café Mistura at Strathbrock and Fauldhouse Partnership Centres are officially Breastfeeding Friendly. Both cafes are operated by Capability Scotland and offer support to work for people with disabilities.

The award-winning trio pays tribute to jazz legend Fats Waller, with a show full of classic tunes and humour.   Widely regarded as a world class talent, this is a wonderful opportunity to hear pianist Brian Kellock who is joined by Kenny Ellis on bass and John Rae on drums.  Pianist and organist Fats Waller was best known for his comic persona and compositions.  Saturday 20 August, 7.30pm.  Non-auditorium.  Tickets £14/£12, Howden Park Centre, tel: 01506 777666.

A unique exhibition of mixed media and installation pieces from 10 Chinese artists living in the UK and China. During the last 25 years the world has seen a great change as well as China’s emerging superpower status.  Focusing on the idea of looking at something ‘From a Distance’, the individual exhibiting artists explore a wide range of questions about the nature of change. Friday 15 July to Sunday 28 August (Artist Talk: 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 28 August).  Free entry,  Howden Park Centre, tel: 01506 777666.

Prostate Cancer Support  
The next meeting will be held on Thursday  4 August at 7pm at West Lothian Ability Centre, Carmondean Centre Road, Livingston. The speaker will be Terry Kehoe, Head of Oncology Physics at the Edinburgh Cancer Centre. The meeting provides an opportunity for recently diagnosed men concerned about treatment choice to have an informal chat with other men who have already experienced the various treatments and side effects.
