  School returns to Kirknewton village  

Kirknewton Primary School has re-opened following a £1.35 million refurbishment. Staff and pupils were excited to return to the village this week, after a year sharing with East Calder Primary to allow the improvement work to safely take place. Extensive upgrade work has taken place in the school which has included a new electrical system, creating a new enclosed general purpose space and disabled access improvements.

  First day at £7.5 million Southdale Primary  
  West Lothian's newest school has opened its doors to local children. The first ever pupil intake was welcomed to the stunning new Southdale Primary School in Armadale this week. West Lothian Council has invested £7.5 million to build the impressive new school which will provide quality education for the town's growing population. Construction work was completed on time and on budget, and families who attended the recent open session all commented at the school's bright and open design.

  Road closures and diversions in September  

A number of road closures and diversions are planned for September, including the annual Pedal for Scotland event, which goes through Linlithgow, Bridgend and Winchburgh.

  Concordat underlines commitment to the environment  
  West Lothian Council has signed a Concordat with the Central Scotland Green Network (CSGN), which aims to make a significant contribution to Scotland’s sustainable economic development, for a second time. The goal of the Concordat is to deliver a step change in environmental quality, woodland cover and recreational opportunities and to make the area a more attractive place to live and do business; and to help to absorb CO2, enhance biodiversity and promote healthier and more active lifestyles.

  Leisure centre refurb set for Broxburn  
  The swimming pool changing facilities at Xcite Broxburn are set to be transformed along with the facility's soft play area. The development will see a totally new changing village layout, including new décor, cubicles and access to the pools, sauna and steam room. During the refurb the SpaceBugs soft play area will also be refreshed with new kit, décor and upgrades to the internal structure. The works have been scheduled to follow the end of the busy school holiday period with the building re-opening on Monday 5 September.

Enjoy a fascinating glimpse into the world of Henri Matisse with this special tour at Linlithgow Burgh Halls by Kerry Watson from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.  The tour will focus on the work in the current exhibition, Matisse: Drawing with Scissors - Late Works 1950-1954 and make links to the inspiration that the artist found in the later years of his life. An Evening of Guitar Robin Robertson and Malcolm Macfarlane   Fri 16 September, Howden Park Centre
A must for guitar lovers, acclaimed musicians, Robin Robertson and Malcolm Macfarlane come together to play a diverse programme of music from a selection of the world’s most famous players.  Hear a wide range of playing styles including jazz, blues, fusion and pop, with music from Wes Montgomery, Django Reinhardt, Pat Metheny, George Benson and Larry Carlton. Bathgate Music Festival   1 to 4 September
The annual Bathgate Music Festival takes place at venues across the town from Thursday 1 to Sunday 4 September. If you like music, whether it is traditional, folk, blues, country, 60s, musicals or classical,  there’s something for you and many of the events are free. A fantastic weekend of live music will be brought to a close at the Party in the Park family fun day in Kirkton Park on Sunday 4 September from 11am.

Linlithgow Folk Festival   7 to 11 September
Multi-award-winning traditional musicians, The Outside Track, are set to headline the 18th annual festival. The concert on Saturday 10 September in Linlithgow Academy Theatre will be the high point of the five-day event, which also includes a musical cruise on the canal, a family ceilidh, the Hub at the Masonic Hall, a Bluegrass concert and Gospel session and outdoor stage at the Cross. Many of the events are free.
